THIRTEEN

By the time the smoke had cleared, they were gone, into the mine, and everyone from my side had finished gathering in the street.

“Hannah, Megan, Luke, I want you to take up positions with good views of the mine entrance. Shoot anyone that comes out, got it?” I asked.

“On it,” Hannah replied, and she and Megan and Luke made sure to snag scoped rifles and took off towards the nearest buildings.

“Where are we at with casualties?” I asked, looking at Lisa. During all the chaos, they’d managed to drag the injured into one of the apartment buildings.

“Malcolm and Lauri are dead,” Lisa replied flatly. “Judy, David, and Mike have all been shot. Melanie’s helping them now. Although I don’t think that’s a complete headcount.”

“Fay was unconscious last I saw her,” I said. Melanie must have managed to get Susan to help her to get Fay and James into town during the chaos. Good, I didn’t want us spread out all over the place, not now.

“What do we do?” Susan asked.

I sighed, looking back at the mine. “I’m going in after them.”

“That’s-Chris, that’s insane,” Lisa said. “We got lucky, but-”

“And we need to press the attack,” I replied. “God alone knows what they’ve got in there. They just suffered another defeat, they’re on the run. We need to hit them again, and keep hitting them until they’re dead or surrender.”

“Okay,” Lisa said after a minute, looking miserable, “okay fine. But please, please, Chris, give me five, ten minutes so we can regroup and maybe find another way into the mine.”

I wanted to argue with her, but that was actually a great point. But how would we do that without either a lot of luck or a lot of scouting? I looked around, briefly stymied, and my eyes fell onto the building nearest the mine on the left side. It appeared very official-looking, like an office building, and said HEADQUARTERS on the front.

“There,” I said, striking off towards it. “Start getting weapons gathered, and prep the injured to move,” I called as I jogged off.

“On it,” Lisa called back.

I heard running footsteps as I came up to the front entrance. Susan had joined me. “I can help look,” she said.

“Appreciate it,” I replied.

It was hard not to just grab a gun and go charging off into the mine, but they were right. There was a decent chance there was some other way into the underground complex, a place where they had all the advantages. Decent change if I just charged in there I’d get slaughtered, and anyone who went with me would, too.

Not a pretty thought.

We walked in through the front door, still wary in case any stragglers had stayed or been left behind. We passed through the front lobby, went down a hallway, and came into a place that had been converted into a more rugged HQ than what was originally intended. There was a lot of gear around, scattered across the tables, and I saw some of those anonymous black crates with the dark foam padding inside that seemed so common in military shooter games and movies.
